This programme equips you with practical tools, modern coaching frameworks, and in-depth insight to confidently coach intermediate surfers across a range of formats, from 1:1 sessions to structured group courses.
Course content includes:
- Contemporary coaching theory and applied fundamentals
- Getting out back: paddling efficiency, turtle rolls, timing, and impact-zone skills
- Coaching beyond the break: positioning, movement, wave selection, and decision-making
- Wave entry skills: take-offs, pop-ups, and effective wave setup
- Wave riding progression: turn types, technique breakdowns, and body mechanics
- Delivering effective feedback and designing progressive lesson plans for different surfers and session types
You’ll also cover warm-ups, fitness and conditioning, equipment choices, ocean awareness, and environmental factors.

COURSE FORMAT
- 2-day classroom-based course, including 2 water sessions (conditions permitting)
- Assessed knowledge questions at the end of the classroom phase
- 20 logged coaching sessions (approx. 30-40 hours) with reflective practice at your home surf school
- Final assessed lesson delivered at your Trainer Assessor’s school
- Flexible completion window: up to 12 months to complete all assessment requirements
Pre-requisites
- Recognised Level 1 surf instructor qualification (Surfing England or ISA)
- Minimum of 1 year teaching beginner surf lessons
- Personal surfing ability: confident in waves up to head-high, demonstrating a range of turns and competence beyond the break and through the impact zone on performance mini mals
- Valid NVBLQ (lifeguard qualification)
- Certified safeguarding training (Surfing England, NSPCC, or equivalent — can be completed alongside the course)
- 2-day classroom-based course, including 2 water sessions (conditions permitting)
- Assessed knowledge questions at the end of the classroom phase
- 20 logged coaching sessions (approx. 30-40 hours) with reflective practice at your home surf school
