Damon B.
Director / Senior Surf Instructor
A former Surfing England Head Coach, with15 years of coaching experience. Damon brings a wealth of experience and inspiration to Surfing Croyde Bay
Barnstaple, North Devon
I started surfing ten years ago, with friends firstly, and later working at a surf camp in Australia- where my passion for the sport and lifestyle was truly established.
I got into instructing to share my love and passion for the sport which has given me so much, physically and mentally. It’s a privilege for me to be able to share this with others and watch progression and coach surfers of any age and ability, from beginners to experienced. Keep the stoke!
When the client sets an individual goal and together we manage to achieve that in a session, whether it be to complete a pop up, more advanced manoeuvres or to simply increase confidence in the water.
Surfing Croyde Bay really reflects the ethos which first sparked my love of surfing. The positive energy and inclusivity of the school, coupled with the support of the extremely knowledgeable coaches and the real focus on both a client’s experience and their safety, make Surfing Croyde Bay awesome to be part of. The 6:1 ratio ensures for me as a coach that I have the time with clients to help them achieve their goals in the water. All of these factors give me the tools to give clients the best experience from each session.
Norway. I’ve done warm so it’s time to try cold- really cold!

We’re lucky to have had Albi as a surf coach and NCC lead coasteer guide for five seasons now. Albi is a core part of our team, summers wouldn’t be the same without him!
South End, Essex
Surfing for me started with family holidays in Croyde, I first rode a surfboard when I was 12 but from then only surfed a week a year. At 19 I went to a surf camp in Costa Rica and I’ve been surfing since 🤙
I was given the opportunity to be trained up as in instructor at SCB under Damon, it was an opportunity I couldn’t miss. Now I get to spend every day at the beach, what’s better than that?!
When you suggest an adjustment to someone’s surfing and then you get to see the lightbulb moment and excitement when it works.
I’d like to surf in Lombok again, crystal clear blue water and no need for a wetsuit.
Alex B.
Surf Instructor ISA Level 1
Alex is a new addition to our team for 2023, and is already making a big impact bringing fun positive energy to our lessons. It’s great to have her as a part of our crew.
Barnstaple, North Devon
I still remember my first surf lessons really vividly and how much I looked up to the instructors who taught me. I had so much fun and was never nervous about making mistakes or falling off. My goal is to always create the same environment in every lesson I teach and show people how much fun surfing can be, and that there’s no pressure to be perfect.
It’s great watching people’s confidence in themselves grow as the lesson goes on and become more confident in their abilities. Whether that be by starting to paddle for their own waves, attempting new manoeuvres or just by feeling more comfortable in the sea. It’s awesome to be a part of teaching someone a whole new skill and seeing the positive effects surfing can have.
It’s the kind of place where you’re excited to go to work everyday! Everyone is so friendly and welcoming and the surf school really breaks the stigma that surfing can be intimidating as everyone who works here is always so willing to help you out.
As a relatively junior surf instructor it’s also great to be at a surf school with a crew that has so much experience and some really knowledgeable senior instructors for me to look up to.
I have always wanted to go and surf in Tofino which is near Vancouver, Canada. It’s not uncommon for people to see Orcas in the distance hunting seals when surfing here!
Joe S.

My surfing began with my dad, he surfed and started teaching me when I was 8 years old. Surfing is the thing that I love to do most so I trained to become an instructor, it allows me to share my passion for the sport with others.
Helping someone catch their first unbroken wave and sharing the stoke with them🤙
The high morale and positivity of all the other instructors and staff. Also the epic location above the best beach for surfing in the UK in my opinion.

I started surfing at 8 and got heavily involved from around 12. I started training with surf development when I was 13/14 and really enjoyed having a good group of friends that were competitive people that pushed me in surfing and my surf related fitness.
I became a surf instructor because I loved the aspect of coaching people to do what I have had a passion for.
I mostly enjoy the smile on people’s faces when they stand up and jump off the board and have the biggest smile on their faces.
I feel like there is a big family at the surf school and being at a place where you can see the sea from where you work is pretty dreamy.
If I could surf anywhere it would probably be back in Indonesia somewhere and get the boat out to the surf with the squad.

I enjoy teaching people and seeing peoples reactions when they achieve a goal that they didn’t think they would achieve. I also like the social side of a surf lesson getting to know the people on the lesson.
I work at this surf school because we have an amazing set up with hot showers, Indoor changing rooms, a cafe and an incredible team
I would love to surf the Maldives.

I had my first lesson when I was about 8. I did lessons at Westward Ho with my primary school surf club. Then I got a board for my 14th birthday and started surfing regularly with a friend.
I enjoy helping people get to their feet for the first time, or progress their surfing further, and then seeing the look of excitement on their faces
The staff are all really nice and it is conveniently linked to a cafe so I can always have a nice hot chocolate after coming out of the sea
As a goofy footer I’ve always wanted to go to impossibles in Indonesia to try and hunt down some long lefts.

I started surfing around the age of 8. My dad and brother have surfed for as long as I can remember and growing up I looked up to them a lot – I started surfing at croyde surf club on Monday nights with them both and doing that every week along with surf life saving. I grew to love it and love the ocean and haven’t stopped since !
I trained to be an instructor because I hope to help everyone else find the same love for the sea and love for surfing that I have experienced.
Seeing people enjoying themselves and seeing their progression of their surfing.
Surfing is seen as such a scary thing and I hope to help people understand and experience that it’s not something to fear at all but something that something that so much joy can be gained from.
Because of the amazing community that has been created between both the cafe and the surf school and the welcoming nature of surfing Croyde Bay.
The Mentawis have always been somewhere I want to surf and also Indonesia – both because of the amazing waves and warm water!!!

I started surfing when I was 9 years old. My dad had been surfing for ages so got me into it. I decided to become a surf instructor to get new people into the sport and enjoy it as much as I did when I started.
Seeing people get the same sort of buzz and having good interactions with them
It’s got a great community and everyone working is fun and chill to work with

I started surfing in when I was 12 years old in South Africa. Surfing was apart of my growing up & lifestyle in South Africa so my Dad started teaching me at 12 as he was part of the core Durban Surf Culture.
I love surfing and being in the water and I absolutely enjoy sharing and teaching the wonderful skill with others, it is so rewarding!
It is the best Surf School in the area! Surfing Croyde Bat have well seasoned surfers instructing and sharing their knowledge, they are not just seasonal jobs to them. It is a passion they want to share. We provide 1:1 coaching, group sessions as well as progressive coaching with Level 2 qualified surf coaches of a competing level.
My favourite places to surf are Mexico, Pascuales is Colima’s thumping beach break with a endless barrels and Fuerteventura Lobos with perfect long right hand point break that offers endless turns & barrel sections!
